I was out taking my grandchildren to the park the other day. On the way we passed someone smoking outside because you aren't allowed to smoke in public places. To my delight the youngest one looked up at me and asked if we could cross the road to get away from the man who was smoking. So that's what we did. We crossed the road.
It also entered my mind if this man knew we were crossing road because of him. Probably not. It seems that smokers in general aren't very aware of the imapct their nasty habit has on the rest of us. I admit that in the past I was the same. I simply didn't think. I mean, not only do you affect healthy people, you also affect people with asthma and of course pregnant women. It's not fair that they should put up with this.
I was talking with one young lady just recently who was saying that she's trying to give up smoking. I told her that I could tell that she was a smoker from the smell on her clothes. She looked at me in shock. She simply didn't realize that the smoke could linger on her for so long. Yes that's right. If you are a smoker we can tell straight away. We don't have to actually see you light up. No matter how much money you spend on expensive perfumes and shower gel, you'll not be able to get rid of that stale and horrid smell.
I was with my grandkids at the park the other day. It was great fun to see their faces light up with such joy as they ran around with the other kids. Whilst I was sitting down with my granddaughter eating an ice cream another granddad sat down at the seats next to us and lit up a cigar. The fumes were going everywhere and it was more than disgusting.
I told the man that I wasn't happy about my grandkids breathing in his cigar smoke. He told me that he was outside and that the smoke would dissipate. Well, I told his that if I can smell it then it means we're breathing it in. He might not mind his grandkids dying from passive smoking but I wanted to protect mine from such a fate.
At this point we were getting quite a few stares from other people who were obviously non-smokers too (or at least weren't smoking there and then). I think this embarrassed the man who then took his grandkid and walked off. Don't these people think about others? I'm not sure if it's selfishness or stupidity. Perhaps it's both!
If you find yourself in a situation like this, please say something about it. People are far too polite for their own good.

Remember when you smoke you're not just hurting yourself. There are other people around you who have to breathe in your horrid smoke and all too many people die for no fault of their own.
When I realized this myself I felt awful that I was harming my most nearest and dearest. I have done a lot more research on this particular area so that I can help educate others. I look at my grandkids and their friends and this give me the inspiration to keep on.
I even wonder about animals who have owners that are smokers. I feel sorry for pets who have no choice but to breathe the smoke in. People say that they love their pets but then smoke in the same room as them. It's very sad all round.
It's also not setting a good example. Although to be honest, I don't know why kids would want to have yellow and brown skin and teeth. But for some reason kids want to start smoking if they see it around them.

Besides you health and ultimately your life. You have to look at the money costs of smoking. It's ridiculous when you think about it. Try and explain smoking to an alien from outer space. What do you say? Oh, these are things you put in your mouth. They cost a lot of money, taste awful to begin with but then you get addicted and eventually it will kill you.
Not much of a sales pitch is it? Add to that that your health and home insurance premiums are going to be considerably higher. In terms of health insurance you can easily pay twice as much for the obvious reason that you are going to be a much higher risk to the insurer.
Then with home insurance you'll pay roughly 10% more because of the increased risk of house fires caused by unattended cigarettes.
I hear people complain all the time about how they are strapped for cash and that they wish they could have more spare money. But then these people also smoke a lot of cigarettes. I guess they think that it's simply an expense they have to live with. What a shame.

I didn't realize how unfit I was until I stopped smoking. Suddenly I felt I could do much more because I wasn't constantly out of breath. I feel on top of the world. I can play with my grand kids who love their new healthier and fitter granddad.
We go to the park, play on the swings and generally have a great time. We even went to one of those big theme parks last year and I don't think there was a single ride I didn't go on. My favourite is the big wheel as it reminds me of when I was a kid and I would go to the local carnival.
I've even joined a walking club and we go out every other weekend to either climb a hill or walk along a forest path. I really enjoy this because it keeps me fit and I get to meet more people. When I retired I didn't really do much other than watch the TV. Now I'm a lot more outgoing and sociable. I have quitting smoking to thank for that.

I'm glad to hear that yet another country is taking the decision of banning smoking from public areas including bars. We have too much of a culture of smoking over the years and we need to reverse this. Instead of smoking being the norm, we need to make people feel that they are outcasts.
I don't mean to sound harsh, as an ex-smoker I know how these people feel, but I really am a convert to a healthier way of life. I do my best to spread the word, not of God but of giving up smoking. Most of the time people don't want to know but there are some who agree but want some support which is what I try to give.
Many governments have been apprehensive of banning smoking in public places because of fears from bar owners. They worry that customers simply will stay at home. However it turns out that this really hasn't happened as people will simply go outside for a quick puff.
Hopefully it's only going to be a matter of time before smoking is banned completely and people will consider it to be as awful as cocaine. I really hope that future generation heed this advice because it's a truly horrible habit that is evil.
